Gian Piero Gasperini Fired By Inter Milan

Inter Milan manager Gian Piero Gasperini got the boot on Wednesday, a day after the club's embarrassing 3-1 loss to newly-promoted Novara. That loss came on the heels of a loss to Trabzonspor at home in Champions League action as they remain winless after five matches in all competitions this season. He leaves the club as the first manager Inter has ever had to have not won a match with the club.

"Internazionale can communicate that this morning, at the training base in Appiano Gentile, first-team training was led by [the assitant coaches] Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi. The team thanks Gian Piero Gasperini for the efforts he showed in carrying out his role, and express regret over this breaking of the relationship with the manager," read a statement on the club's website.

Through three league matches, Inter have just one point. Along with a Supercoppa Italiana loss and their shock loss in Champions League play, it is not hard to see why the club relieved him of his duties. As if the loss to Novara didn't make it predictable enough that Gasperini was on his way out, the club's owner Massimo Moratti added his two cents.

"I don't believe Gasperini will stay. It looks like a difficult situation to me. Who will replace him? I haven't thought about that yet," Moratti said.

If that's not an indication of an imminent firing, nothing is. Gasperini's hiring this summer wasn't a very popular one. He had only managed Crotone and Genoa prior to taking the Inter job with fifth place at Genoa the high point of his career, hardly the resume of a manager who takes over at a club like Inter. After being turned down by Fabio Capello and Marcelo Bielsa, Inter were in a bit of a bind and settle on Gasperini.

Now Gasperini is out, but they do not have anyone to replace him yet. Considering the strength of Napoli, Juventus and an expected resurgence from AC Milan, Inter cannot afford to drop many more points. Do so and they might be out of the title race before the new year.
