Supercopa de Espana: Real 2 Barca 2 (Video)

If the first leg of the 2011 Supercopa de Espana (Spanish Supercup) is any indication, we're in for a fantastic second leg on Wednesday night at the Camp Nou. In a back and forth match where momentum shifted constantly, Real Madrid and Barcelona eventually played to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the cup at the Santiago Bernabeu, setting up a second leg where both teams will have everything to play for.

Gerard Pique did not start the match for Barcelona and his absence was noticeable in the 13th minute, when Los Merengues took an early lead. Thanks to some fantastic combination play between Karim Benzema and Mesut Özil, Madrid took the lead in a fashion that looked much too easy, with Özil providing the finish.

Barcelona would bounce back quickly, scoring two goals before the end of the first half, delivering what appeared to be a crushing blow to Real Madrid before the teams headed for the locker room. In the 36th minute, Lionel Messi and David Villa combined for the equalizer before Messi scored to give the Blaugranas the lead in the 45th minute, just before the stroke of halftime.

Madrid came out looking motivated and unaffected by Barcelona's comeback, however, and netted an equalizer in the 54th minute, with Xabi Alonso scoring off of an assist by Pepe on a set piece. From that point forward, Madrid would absolutely dominate the match.

However, Los Merengues failed to score again, and they will be disappointed that they've left themselves such a difficult task on Wednesday at the Camp Nou. It's not without a minor bit of controversy, though, as the referee called an extremely loose game by the normal standards of Spanish officials, as both teams were denied penalty calls that were borderline, if we're being generous to referee Fernando Teixeira Vitienes.

Pique and Xavi Hernandez, who were both second half substitutes, are expected to be able to go 90 minutes in the return leg of the Supercup at the Camp Nou. This, combined with the draw Sunday at the Bernabeu, should make the Blaugranas slight favorites to lift the trophy mid-week.
