Aguero Asks For Transfer Away From Atletico

In a personal statement left on his verified twitter page and his personal website, Atletico Madrid and Argentina international striker Sergio Aguero expressed his desire to move away from Atletico Madrid. Atletico purchased Aguero from Independiente in 2006, and since then he has become one of the most highly coveted young players in world football. He's scored 74 goals in La Liga in his time at Atletico, including double-digit tallies in all of the last four seasons and 20 goals this year. In all competitions, Aguero has scored over 100 goals for Atletico Madrid.

It's been an up and down ride for the club since Aguero arrived, with some of the highs including qualifying for Champions League and winning the Europa League. However, this season was a serious disappointment for Atletico, and as a result, Aguero has asked for a transfer elsewhere. Here is an excerpt from his statement on his personal website.
"De más está decir que no se trata de una cuestión económica sino estrictamente deportiva. Por eso quiero expresar claramente mi reconocimiento al club por los esfuerzos que ha hecho por mantenerme hasta con un salario acorde a las instituciones más grandes del mundo."
Roughly translated, the above-quoted text says that his decision to ask for a transfer is strictly a sporting decision, not an economic one. He then thanks the club for paying him a salary consistent with what he would have received from a richer club.

However, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo responded to Aguero's public comments requesting a transfer from the club by insisting the forward is not for sale.

In comments made on Radio Marca, Cerezo was forceful in his opinions about the situation.
"We are not going to change our thinking. We will not sell or trade for Aguero. If anyone wants to know something new, ask him directly. There is no getting around it. El Kun has a signed contract. He has shown his desire to leave, but we say the same thing. We do not want to sell. We respect his decision, but he also has to respect ours. He has a commitment to us."
There is believed to be a €45 million buyout clause in Aguero's new contract he signed in January that was supposed to keep him with Atletico through 2014. Reports say he signed the deal with the understanding that he would be allow to make a big money move in the summer. Aguero has been one of Atletico's top performers since joining the club in 2006 and with the likely departure of Diego Forlan in the summer, losing Aguero as well would be a big blow.

Cerezo also said in his interview that the club was unaware of where Aguero wants to go, but stressed that there had been no official contact from another club concerning the forward. Aguero has already been linked with Real Madrid and several Serie A clubs but there is still no news of Manchester City's interest.
