Video: FC Porto Clinched Portuguese Liga Title

FC Porto have clinched their 25th league title with a 2-1 win over defending champions Benfica after a remarkable run that's seen them drop just four points in 25 matches for a 23-2-0 (W-D-L) record.

With five games left in the season, Porto are now sixteen points clear of Benfica, who themselves have a fifteen point lead over third place Braga. Porto's eventual victory, then, was never in any doubt - at best Benfica could have closed the gap to ten points with a home win over the runaway leaders, but a Hulk penalty proved the difference between the sides as the league trophy changed hands.

Manager Villas Boas, in his first season in charge following Jesualdo Ferreira sacking following a miserable 2009/10 season where Porto managed the unthinkable in finishing third in the league for the first time in almost a decade, was ecstatic following the victory.

"We showed who plays the best football. This was constantly ignored, on a daily basis by everyone so our cry of revolt against that helped us, with merit due to the players, to win the title," said the ecstatic Boas

Porto certainly boast the meanest defence in the Portuguese Liga, conceding a mere nine goals (nobody else is even under twenty conceded) while scoring 58 for a ludicrous goal differential of +49. They become only the second team in Portuguese history to win a league title unbeaten after Benfica managed the feat in the 70s, but there's plenty of time for the new champions to fall - their league games are now irrelevant and the team's priorities are elsewhere with the Europa League to be won.
