Video: Champions League Quarterfinal 1st Leg

Barcelona - all but secured their spot in the Champions League semi-finals and a probable showdown with arch rivals Real Madrid after building a huge 5-1 first-leg lead over Shakhtar Donetsk. Following on from Madrid's 4-0 thumping of Tottenham, Barca appear to have done all the hard work in their home quarter-final tie after another memorable European night at the Nou Camp. Andres Iniesta, Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Seydou Keita and Xavi were on the mark for the Catalan giants, while Shakhtar's sole reply came from Yaroslav Rakitskiy when they were already 3-0 down.

Wayne Rooney - facing an FA charge for swearing live on TV which could see him banned for two domestic matches, let his feet do the talking with a sweetly-struck 24th-minute goal off the post following a flowing United build-up. United dominated the match for long periods with Rooney providing much of their inspiration to leave Chelsea, who had a huge shout for a late penalty, a huge task to save the tie in the second leg at Old Trafford.

Tottenham Hotspur - their debut in Champions League season has been a story of unlikely comebacks but even the staunchest believer will hold little hope they can recover from Tuesday's 4-0 thrashing by Real Madrid. Way back in August Spurs, dipped their toe into the Champions League so tentatively that within 30 minutes of their qualifying round first-leg match at Young Boys of Berne they were 3-0 down but they pulled two goals back and then won the second leg with a convincing 4-0 scoreline.

Inter Milan - treble winners under Jose Mourinho last season, saw their season disintegrate as they collapsed 5-2 at home to Schalke 04 in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday. Four days after seeing their hopes of a sixth successive scudetto crushed in a 3-0 defeat by rivals AC Milan, Inter's hopes of retaining the Champions League were also in tatters after another night of defensive calamity at the San Siro. Andrea Ranocchia's own goal and Cristian Chivu's second red card in as many games either side of the hour summed up Inter's defensive misfortunes on a dismal night in Milan.
