Video: Europa League, Rossi And Shevchenko

Giuseppe Rossi started Villarreal's comeback with his 24th goal of the season, and the Yellow Submarine won 3-2 at Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday night in the first leg of their third-round matchup in the Europa League. Rossi, a New Jersey native, tied the game 1-1 in the 42nd minute with his seventh Europa League goal, matching Porto's Radamel Falcao for the most in the competition. Nimar replaced Rossi in the 69th and scored in the 70th minute and the fourth minute of injury time. Leverkusen got their goals from Michal Kadlec in the 33rd minute and Gonzalo Castro in the 72nd.

Osorio Alan converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute, leading Braga to a 1-0 victory over visiting Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven was held to a 0-0 tie by visiting Glasgow Rangers. Twente gave themselves a healthy advantage against Zenit St Petersburg, winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Luuk de Jong and former Wigan Athletic midfielder Deny Landzaat, while Alex got the only goal as Spartak Moscow grabbed both an away goal and a 1-0 victory against Ajax.

Paris St Germain let a 1-0 lead slip as they lost 2-1 away to Benfica in a result that will nevertheless give them a decent chance of progressing to the competition's quarter-finals. FC Porto grabbed a significant 1-0 first leg lead after a fine away win against CSKA Moscow. Midfielder Fredy Guarin found the only goal of the game in the 70th minute, thanks to a drive from the edge of the penalty area that eluded goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Manchester City were put in the cold and will have a mountain to climb at the City of Manchester Stadium after losing 2-0 to Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine. Former Chelsea forward, Andriy Shevchenko was behind most of Dynamo's best, principally counter-attacking moves and appropriately gave his side the lead in the 25th minute and inspired Kiev for a deserved victory. The disappointing Edin Dzeko especially will need to improve appreciably if he is to preserve City's Europa League hopes by upstaging his long-term hero Shevchenko in Manchester.
