Sunday Video Highlights: La Liga And Serie A

Real Madrid recovered from the second-minute dismissal of goalkeeper Iker Casillas to secure a battling 1-0 win at Espanyol at the Estadio Cornella El Prat. Barca's record 16-match winning run ended on Saturday when they had to fight back from a goal down to rescue a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon and Real took full advantage with a gritty display.

Casillas, Spain's World Cup-winning captain, was shown a straight red after bringing down Jose Callejon just outside the area and Real coach Jose Mourinho immediately brought on reserve keeper Antonio Adan to replace Argentina winger Angel Di Maria. The dismissal lifted the home fans but they were silenced on 24 minutes when Real defender Marcelo cut in from the left wing and squeezed a shot past Carlos Kameni from a tight angle. January loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor almost snatched a second in the 40th minute but the Togo international's scooped shot bounced on top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick. Adebayor had chances to make the game safe late in the second half but Kameni pulled off two superb saves.

Deportivo la Coruna grabbed a much-needed win in La Liga with a 1-0 win over Villarreal at the Estadio Riazor. Antonio Lopo's goal on the hour-mark was enough to their lacklustre visitors to a second straight defeat against lowly opposition, following their home defeat by the same scoreline last weekend to struggling neighbours Levante. With Thursday's Europa League trip to Napoli in mind, top scorer Giuseppe Rossi was dropped to the Villarreal bench. With lone striker Nilmar often isolated in the early stages, Deportivo took the initiative with plenty of possession.

Meanwhile in Serie A, Internazionale suffered a blow to their title hopes with a 1-0 defeat at Juventus in the Derby d'Italia. Alessandro Matri scored the only goal of the game, taking advantage of slack Inter marking to head home Frederic Sorensen’s cross in the 30th minute. Samuel Eto’o should have salvaged a point late on but he inexplicably blazed his shot against the bar from three yards after Maicon picked him out with a low cross from the right. Inter struggled to convert their possession into clear cut opportunities and now sit eight points behind Serie A leaders AC Milan, with a game in hand.

In other matches, strikes from Alvaro Gonzalez and Libor Kozak gave Lazio a fighting chance of making next year’s Champions League when the Rome side beat Brescia 2-0 at the Stadio Mario Rigamonti, while Fiorentina staged a dramatic comeback against Palermo, twice fighting back from a goal down to register a stunning 4-2 win at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Juventus 1 - 0 Internazionale

Palermo 2 - 4 Fiorentina

Sampdoria 3 - 1 Bologna

Deportivo La Coruna 1 - 0 Villarreal

Espanyol 0 - 1 Real Madrid
