Roma 2 Shakhtar Donetsk 3: Knocked-Out

Shakhtar Donetsk heaped further misery on AS Roma with a deserved 3-2 victory in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at the Stadio Olimpico.

Three first-half goals in 13 minutes from Shakhtar’s Brazilian trio of Jadson, Douglas Costa, and Luiz Adriano put Roma to the sword in the Eternal City, before Jeremy Menez's second-half consolation gave Roma faint hope ahead of March's return leg in Ukraine.

Simone Perrotta put Roma ahead in the 28th minute before Jadson equalised a minute later, after his effort took a deflection off Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi. Costa then gave the visitors a 36th-minute lead and Adriano made it 3-1 before half-time. Roma striker Menez reduced arrears on the hour mark but the Italians could not find the equaliser.

The result piles further pressure on Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, whose team went into the game on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Napoli and 5-3 loss at Inter Milan. This defeat leaves Roma's hopes of progression in knock-out stage, dangling by a thread.

Shakhtar, on the other hand, will take a 3-2 victory – and three potentially crucial away goals – back to the Donetsk for the second leg.
