Fans' Groups Blast UEFA Over Tickets' Prices

"To ask fans to fork out between £150 and £300 for a single match ticket is outrageous. The £26 admin fee, which is the cherry on top of a pretty disgusting cake" - Michael Brunskill, Football Supporters’ Federation
Furious fans’ groups hit back last night after learning that the price of some tickets for May’s Champions League final at Wembley has been doubled to £176.

It was revealed yesterday, the 11,000 seats available to neutral supporters will be pitched in three categories, costing £150, £225 and £300, with a £26 administration fee on top. Last year, UEFA offered a fourth category of ticket to the general public at £70 for the final in Madrid, but this has been withdrawn. The 50,000 tickets available to fans of the competing teams have risen by £3 to £80.

Michael Brunskill of the Football Supporters’ Federation said, "To ask fans to fork out between £150 and £300 for a single match ticket is outrageous, it strikes of profiteering at the supporters’ expense. That’s before we even get started on the £26 admin fee, which is the cherry on top of a pretty disgusting cake."

UEFA moved the Champions League final to a Saturday last season, saying they wanted more children to attend. However, yesterday’s prices include a ‘youth package’ for one adult and child that will cost a staggering £364. The prices seem steep compared to other football showpieces, with the cheapest tickets for last year’s World Cup final in South Africa costing £106.

The price structure fares even worse in comparison to other major sporting events. Seats are available for the 100m final night of the Olympics next year for as little as £50 for a three-hour session. Tickets for the last two days of The Open at Royal St George’s this summer are also £50 each, while a Centre Court ticket for men’s final day at Wimbledon last year cost £104.

UEFA director of competitions Giorgio Marchetti said last night, "We have to benchmark this against other comparable events."
