Luis Suarez: From Ajax To Anfield?

Liverpool are favourites to sign Luis Suarez after Ajax paved the way for his departure by stripping him of the club captaincy.

Though the Uruguayan striker is being tracked by Tottenham, he knows he is not their first choice and has let those closest to him know that his desire is to move to Anfield, especially as there is a strong Spanish speaking influence in the dressing room.

The Dutch Eredivise is currently in the middle of its winter break but many clubs played friendlies at the weekend and Suarez was involved in Ajax’s match in Turkey. But his body language was poor throughout and it was significant that he was noticeably detached from his team-mates before, during and after the game. Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenberg has taken over the armband.

Coach Frank de Boer has accepted that Suarez will move and he has started making preparations for life after the 23-year-old by looking for a replacement. Suarez fits the profile of player Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group are looking to recruit and, as Sportsmail revealed last week, Liverpool have already contacted Ajax to start discussions.

Ajax want £27m for Suarez but he is likely to cost significantly less. He is Liverpool’s number one January target. Aside from a striker, manager Kenny Dalglish also needs a wide man and Aston Villa’s Ashley Young and Stewart Downing have both been discussed, as has Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia. Liverpool are also interested in Villa’s left-back Stephen Warnock.
