Carling Cup & Coppa Italia - It's Hammer Time

When was the last time a team won 7-1 and were defeated 4-0 in their next match? The statisticians will likely be scrabbling for a while to find out that little nugget, but in the meantime they can serve up two other facts: Manchester United's 29-game unbeaten run is at an end and they have also suffered their first League Cup defeat since Coventry City triumphed 2-0 way back in September 2007.

Manchester United crashed out of the Carling Cup in spectacular style on Tuesday night with a 4-0 hammering in a snow storm at West Ham. Jonathan Spector and Carlton Cole scored two goals each at Upton Park as holders United were beaten in the competiton for the first time in more than three years.

In the day's other quarter-final, Arsenal eased past Wigan 2-0 to progress, thanks to an own goal from Antonin Alcaraz's just before half-time and a Nicklas Bendtner strike. Theo Walcott's corner eluded Bendtner to bounce off the Paraguayan and, while Carlos Vela missed a sitter early on, he provided the telling cross for Bendtner to stab home from close range to seal the game.

Meanwhile, last year's semi-finalists Fiorentina successfully negotiated the fourth round of the Coppa Italia with an emphatic 3-0 win over Reggina. Fiorentina, who lost out to eventual winners Inter Milan in the last four last year, went ahead through El Khouma Babacar on the half hour. Marco Marchionni doubled the lead a minute before half-time and Alessio Cerci secured the victory three minutes after the interval.

Two goals from Pablo Granoche guided Chievo to a 3-0 win over Novara. Granoche scored twice in the first half in the 25th and 35th minutes with Marcos Ariel De Paula hitting the third in an emphatic victory.
