Will Carlo Ancelotti Quit Chelsea?

Carlo Ancelotti is considering his future as Chelsea manager because of the way the club are haggling over the settlement for Ray Wilkins. The Italian has been appalled by the treatment Wilkins has received since his shock dismissal as Ancelotti’s assistant this month. The Double winning boss is understood to have consulted the League Managers’ Association over his future.

Stamford Bridge officials dismissed rumours last night that he had already quit as ‘absolute nonsense’. But the 51-year-old has become more and more disillusioned since club owner Roman Abramovich took the surprising decision to sack the Italian’s trusted No. 2 as well as his lack of total control. He said after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Birmingham: "You have to compare me with (Sir Alex) Ferguson. Because Ferguson has total control of the team. I am just technical direction. Full stop."

Ancelotti and Wilkins had formed a close bond and sources close to the Chelsea manager say he is not sure he can continue to work for the Russian billionaire. Ancelotti worked under a similar regime at Silvio Berlusconi’s AC Milan and had grown used to having a proprietor who made football decisions. But it is the manner in which Wilkins has been treated that is making Ancelotti question his will to continue after less than 18 months in the job.

Tensions also remain high among staff over the promotion of former chief scout Michael Emenalo to assistant coach. Wilkins is known to be disgusted by the way the club he served with distinction as a player and coach have sought to sever their ties. Since Wilkins’ sacking, the champions have suffered three defeats in four league games.
