Raul scored a hat-trick as Schalke collected their second straight home victory and continued their march up the Bundesliga table by thrashing a struggling Werder Bremen side 4-0. Raul celebrates the first of his goals for Schalke against Werder Bremen. Christoph Metzelder opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Raul made it 2-0 two minutes into first-half injury time. The former Real Madrid man struck again in the 56th and 71st minutes, before Bremen had Philipp Bargfrede sent off in the 85th minute. It was just Schalke's second win in the last eight games and extended Bremen's winless streak to four games.

AC Milan strengthened their grip on top spot in Serie A with a 1-0 win over Fiorentina. Ace striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic acrobatically converted a cross into the box on the stroke of halftime at a rainy San Siro to give the Rossoneri a four-point lead pending second-placed Lazio's visit to Parma on Sunday. Fiorentina ended the game with 10 men as Per Kroldrup was shown a red card just seconds before the end.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona matched their biggest away victory with an 8-0 rout of Almeria in La Liga. The World Player of the Year took his tally for the season to 13, while substitute Bojan Krkic scored twice. There was also one apiece from Andres Iniesta and Pedro and an own goal from Santiago Acasiete completed the scoring. It was Barcelona's biggest away win since hammering Las Palmas by the same scoreline in 1959. Almeria coach Juan Manuel Lillo was sacked immediately after the match.

Real Madrid took back top spot in LA Liga as they beat Athletic Bilbao 5-1 at the Bernabeu. Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring, but it was Ronaldo's night as he bagged a hat-trick. Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring and Ronaldo made it 2-0, before Fernando Llorente pulled one back for Bilbao before the interval. Bilbao continued to press until a Sergio Ramos penalty and a Ronaldo free kick settled the game. The Portuguese added a spot kick in stoppage time to seal his hat-trick and put him on 14 goals from 12 games in the league this season.

Kevin Nolan's big return to Bolton turned sour in spectacular fashion as he gave away an early penalty and could do nothing to prevent his old club soaring to the dizzy heights of fourth in the Barclays Premier League with a sensational 5-1 win. Johan Elmander's second-half brace added to a pair of penalties from Kevin Davies and a cool finish from Lee Chung-yong sank Newcastle, who replied through Andy Carroll. Owen Coyle's men thumped the beleaguered Magpies, who finished with 10 men after the late sending-off of Fabricio Coloccini and Chris Hughton hopes the 5-1 thrashing will provide them a "reality check".

Tottenham Hotspur pulled off an incredible comeback to win 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium and claim their first Premier League victory at Arsenal since 1993. Arsenal led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh, but Spurs levelled it up through a fine Gareth Bale finish and a Rafael van der Vaart penalty. Younes Kaboul scored a late glancing header to complete an astonishing turnaround and silence the Emirates.
