Tottenham Hotspur have secured their passage through to the knockout stages of the Champions League after a resounding 3-0 win over Werder Bremen. Younes Kaboul, who scored the decisive winner in Tottenham's thrilling fightback at The Emirates on Saturday, was on the scoresheet again as goals from Luka Modric and Peter Crouch completed the win.

Inter Milan coach Rafael Benitez could breathe a huge sigh of relief after Esteban Cambiasso's lucky strike sent the holders into the Champions League last 16 with an edgy 1-0 win over Twente. Reports had said the Spanish coach could be sacked if his stuttering treble winners, sixth in Serie A, lost against the Dutch champions but they did just enough to seal victory and progression with one Group A game to spare.

Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar struck twice to steer Schalke 04 to a 3-0 win over Olympique Lyon as both sides qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League. Peruvian Jefferson Farfan fired them into the lead in the 14th minute and Huntelaar added another six minutes later. Huntelaar struck again with a minute left to play as Schalke looked nothing like the team languishing in 15th place in the Bundesliga.

Benfica's hopes of qualifying for the last 16 were ended by Hapoel Tel Aviv who secured their first ever Champions League win with a 3-0 victory over the Portuguese side. Goals by Eran Zahavi in the first half and Douglas da Silva and Zahavi in the second did the damage for the hosts.

Valencia's Roberto Soldado scored twice in a 6-1 demolition of Bursaspor to lead his side into the last 16 of the Champions League. Juan Mata set them on their way from the penalty spot after 17 minutes and Soldado, Aritz Aduriz and Joaquin put them 4-0 up by halftime. Soldado scored his fifth of the competition after 55 minutes and Bursaspor scored their first goal in the group when substitute Pablo Batalla pulled one back in the 68th. Alejandro Dominguez rounded out the scoring for the hosts. Valencia's win left them second in Group C, three points behind Manchester United with one game left to play between the two group leaders.

Wayne Rooney celebrated a triumphant return after the England striker grabbed a late winner from the penalty spot to help Manchester United secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League as Rangers crashed out at Ibrox.

Rubin Kazan beat FC Copenhagen 1-0 in the Champions League to keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the knockout round. Rubin captain Christian Noboa fired the home side in front with virtually the last kick of the first half when he converted a penalty in added time after English referee Martin Atkinson had penalised the visitors for a handball.

Pedro Rodriguez scored in each half as Barcelona strolled into the Champions League last 16 as Group D winners with a 3-0 victory over Panathinaikos. Second-half goals from Lionel Messi, who netted for the 10th game in succession for club and country, and Rodriguez sealed a comfortable win for Josep Guardiola's side, who remain top of Group D with 11 points. The result, coupled with Rubin Kazan's 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen, eliminated Panathinaikos.
