Dominant Dortmund Extended Their Lead

Borussia Dortmund extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to seven points with a convincing 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV on Friday evening. The hosts dominated proceedings throughout the match, though it took until the second half for the Yellow-Blacks to convert their possession into goals. Shinji Kagawa opened the scoring shortly after the restart, before playing a key role in his side's second, which was eventually finished off by Lucas Barrios.

Going into the game on the back of ten matches unbeaten, it was no surprise that Dortmund began with confidence. Jürgen Klopp's side controlled possession and probed for an opening, but the Hamburg defence remained composed and the hosts failed to create any meaningful opportunities in the opening 20 minutes. The story continued in much the same vein as the first half progressed, and it took until five minutes before the interval for the game's opening chance to arrive, Mario Götze sending his cushioned volley inches wide following Marcel Schmelzer's cross from the left.

Soon after the break the match took on a new complexion as Dortmund scored with the first chance of the second half. Lukas Piszczek found far too much space on the right and had time to pick out Kagawa, who arrived on the edge of the box to slot home via a slight deflection off of Heiko Westermann. Nuri Sahin hit the target with a powerful free-kick minutes later, but Jaroslav Drobny was well placed to beat the ball away.

Dortmund made absolutely sure of the three points on 70 minutes when Kagawa initiated a fine move with a clever ball through for Götze. The young midfielder's chipped finish was pulled back into the danger area with great awareness by Kevin Großkreutz, where Barrios was happy to oblige the finish. The Paraguayan almost headed a third late on, but Drobny's reflexes denied him. Hamburg thus miss out on the chance to draw level with Bayer Leverkusen in third.

Now the question is who can possibly stop Dortmund, who are now 11 matches without defeat or will it be their destiny to clinch the title after last won it during 2001/02 season.
