Mainz stayed on course to break the record for consecutive wins at the start of a Bundesliga season by defeating defending champions Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Allianz Arena. The league leaders made it six wins in a row and just one win short of the record set by both Bayern and Kaiserslautern for victories at the start of a top-flight campaign.

Kevin Grosskreutz scored twice to extend Borussia Dortmund's winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory at St Pauli. Grosskreutz's opening goal in the 17th minute was cancelled out by Rouwen Hennings nine minutes later but Shinji Kawaga made it 2-1 for Dortmiund in the 50th minute.

After handing Chelsea the title on Friday, Roberto Mancini watched his Manchester City side promptly snatch it away again as Carlos Tevez's second-half strike ended the champions' 100% record with a 1-0 win.

Arsenal were unable to capitalise on City's win as they were stunned at Emirates Stadium by West Bromwich Albion. The surprise 3-2 defeat  has ended the Gunners' unbeaten start to the season and dealt a huge blow to their title hopes ahead of a trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend.

Roma eased the pressure on coach Claudio Ranieri with a last-gasp 1-0 victory over reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico. Substitute Mirko Vucinic's last-minute strike wins the game for Roama while Inter's first league defeat under Rafael Benitez leaves the Nerazzurri with a one-point lead over second-placed Chievo.

A goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic early in the second half was enough to earn AC Milan all three points with a 1-0 win against Genoa. The Swedish striker struck in the 49th minute to decide a tight Serie A encounter at the San Siro.

Valencia struck twice in the first 10 minutes to beat Sporting Gijon 2-0 and continue their excellent start to the season. The goals from Mehmet Topal and Roberto Soldado secured a fourth win in five Primera Division matches for Unai Emery's side.

Barcelona were made to work hard in the pouring rain at San Mames but secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao to move up to second place in the Primera Division. Seydou Keita and Xavi both struck after the break to put Catalans in control, and even though Igor Gabilondo gave Athletic hope late on following David Villa's sending-off, Sergio Busquets clinched victory for the visitors in added time.

Velez Sarsfield moved to the top of the Apertura table after beating nine-man strugglers Olimpo 3-0. The home side were two gaols ahead inside half an hour through Juan Martinez and Maximiliano Morales. Sebastian Dominguez completed the scoring for the home side in the 65th minute.

Estudiantes kept up the pressure on Apertura leaders Velez Sarsfield with a 1-0 win over Boca Juniors. Faustino Rojo got the only goal for second-placed Estudiantes who are one point behind the leaders.
