Mainz Starlet Lewis Holtby Snubs England

Mainz midfielder Lewis Holtby will turn down the opportunity to play for England and instead wait for a call-up to the Germany squad. The German-born 20-year-old, who has impressed in Mainz's unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season, qualifies to play for England as his father is English.

Holtby is captain of Germany Under 21s but according to FIFA rules can still change allegiance as he has not yet played an official senior international for Germany. But the midfielder, who come through the youth ranks with Germany, has set his sights on playing for Joachim Low's side, despite having supported England as a child.

"I have made up my mind and I would like to play for Germany. My father accepts that," said Holtby. He could be set for his first senior call-up by Germany in November when Low has promised to take a look at several young talents for the friendly in Sweden.
