Video Highlight: UCL 2010/11 Day 1

Rangers claimed a memorable point away to Manchester United in their Group C opener in a match where a serious injury to Red Devils midfielder Valencia made a bad night for Sir Alex Ferguson even worse. United made ten changes from the side that drew with Everton at the weekend and failed to carve out enough chances at Old Trafford when being frustrated with a very well disciplined and defensive Rangers side.

Valencia kicked off their Champions League Group C campaign with a thumping 4-0 away win in Turkey against Bursaspor. The Spanish side go top of the group ahead of Manchester United and Rangers in Group C after they crushed Bursaspor 4-0 on their travels. Tino Costa fired home from outside the box to open the scoring and Aritz Aduriz headed home shortly before the interval with Pablo Hernandez and Roberto Soldado adding further goals after the break.

Tottenham roared into a 2-0 lead on their Champions League debut away to Group A rivals Werder Bremen but could not hold on and were pegged back by the hosts. Petri Pasanen put through his own net before Peter Crouch's header from Rafael van der Vaart's cross had the travelling supporters in dreamland in the 18th minute before the Bundesliga side hit back strongly. Hugo Almeida got in between Ledley King and Beniot Assou-Ekotto to head home before the break and then Marko Marin drilled home a superb strike from distance into bottom corner.

Rafael Benitez had an unconvincing beginning to his Inter Milan career in Europe as his side were held to a 2-2 draw by FC Twente. Defending champions Inter Milan had to come from behind to take a point at FC Twente in Group A's other clash, with Samuel Eto'o levelling from long range after Theo Janssen's superb free-kick and Diego Milito's own goal had cancelled out Wesley Sneijder's opener.

Benfica put their poor domestic form to one side as they opened their Champions League Group B campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Hapoel Tel Aviv. Jorge Jesus' Portuguese champions have lost three of the opening four matches in the Liga but were on course when their Brazil defender Luisao scored after 21 minutes. Oscar Cardozo then added a second after 69 minutes to seal the points against a Hapoel side making their first appearance in the group stage.

Barcelona recovered from an early stumble in their Group D meeting at home to Panathinaikos to cruise to a 5-1 success with Lionel Messi once again to the fore. Sidney Govou had fired the visitors into a shock lead, but Barca recovered swiftly with a brace from Messi either side of David Villa's strike before the interval. Argentina international Messi proved he is human as he fluffed his hat-trick chance with a tame penalty he had won in the second period before Pedro and Dani Alves added gloss to the scoreline with late efforts.

FC Copenhagen are alongside the Catalan club at the top of Group D following their late victory over Rubin Kazan, where Dame Ndoye struck three minutes from time with a close-range header. Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes had an evening to forget away to Lyon as he put through his own net for the only goal of the game in the 21st minute before seeing red seven minutes before the interval.
