WC2010 3rd & 4th Placing: Video Highlights

Though Germany were missing Philip Lahm and Lukas Podolksi with flu, and Miroslav Klose’s back injury prevented him making an attempt on Ronaldo’s World Cup goalscoring record, this third place playoff still provided the promised entertainment. Luis Suarez was back in action for Uruguay, and spent most of the game getting booed by the Port Elizabeth crowd. The two teams split five goals in an enjoyably back and forth game, but once again Germany finished third in a World Cup as they defeated Uruguay 3-2.

The Germans took the lead in the 19th minute as Thomas Muller scored off a rebound from a long range shot. It was a shot the goalkeeper should have caught but he didn’t and Muller capitalized. Uruguay then levelled the match in the 28th minute as they caught Germany with a quick counterattack. Cavani received a slick pass from Suarez and finished it off to make it 1-1. In the second half, Uruguay took the lead with a great goal from Diego Forlan. He received a cross just inside the box and volley it past the goalkeeper. It was a great finish but wouldn’t be enough for the win. Germany capitalized on the defensive errors by Uruguay with goals from Marcelle Jansen in the 56th minute and Sami Khedira in the 82nd minute. khedira's goal proved to be the match winning goal for Germany.

All goals (Muller 19′, Cavani 28′, Forlan 51′, Jansen 56′, Khedira 82′)
